Dictionary/Thesaurus Project
A Dictionary for all Third Graders,
A Thesaurus for all Fifth Graders in District 624

The White Bear Lions Club, White Bear Lake, Minnesota,
began another project for the community and this one involves all the
public and private school fifth grade students in our community. We are
providing a thesaurus for each student in all the public and private schools
in White Bear Lake Area School District. In 2005 we started providing
each third grade student with a dictionary of his or her own.
The White Bear Lake Lions have purchased these books and have delivered them
to the third and fifth grade students in all the public and private schools
during this current school year. The dictionary and the thesaurus will become
the property of the students, theirs to own and take with them. A thesaurus
is used in their creative writing to find other words that mean the same
thing. For instance, another word they could use for student might be pupil.
The White Bear Lake Lions purchased the dictionaries and thesauruses from a
non-profit organization called "The Dictionary Project" located in Charleston,
South Carolina. The books will be a soft-cover version of a very will known
thesaurus and dictionary.
The White Bear Lake Lions Club hopes to make this an annual project and that
each year we will present each third grade student with a brand new dictionary
of their own and each fifth grade student with their own brand new thesaurus.
The use of a dictionary and thesaurus are skills that are taught in the third and
fifth grade and are skills that even in this age of electronics, most of us
still need and use.
